Sometimes the body gets stuck in a cycle of inflammation and seizures, leaving individuals stuck with multiple and complex symptoms. They may also feel like their body has betrayed them, or be frustrated by the level of health problems they have to live with.
The inflammation may be started by something as simple as a childhood fall, a virus or infection, or be linked to stress or more unusual immune triggers. The problem is that for some this inflammation can lower their seizure threshold and begin a cycle of seizures. Having a seizure then creates more inflammation. At present it is not clear whether inflammation causes the seizures, or the seizures create the inflammation, but inflammation and seizures are associated, and can keep the cycle going.
This often results in seizures accompanied by symptoms such as
Depending on the area of the brain affected, and how long inflammation has been creating damage, this may also create problems such as mobility, speech and writing issues, digestive disorders, or sleep disturbance.
An individual may be diagnosed with epilepsy and later a seemingly unrelated autoimmune condition such as a thyroid condition, Crohn's colitis, or arthritis. Or, unusually, they are diagnosed with autoimmune epilepsy, however this is an area of diagnosis that is relatively new and may be missed.
Whatever the diagnosis, if someone has both seizures and an autoimmune condition (or is currently experiencing chronic pain or mysterious health symptoms), then there is a possibility that the two may be related and worsening the symptoms of each.

"My consultant at the hospital was so impressed with Jo's approach that he wrote to her and thanked her for identifying my underlying problems, as I had complex symptoms that had been missed by my doctors. It was hard work and took a lot of dedication to improve my health but it was really worth it for the quality of life I have now.
